Art trail for children in Brunssum

Looking for a fun activity with the kids during the upcoming holiday? Or simply on an ordinary Wednesday afternoon or during the weekend? Try out this walking route through the centre of Brunssum. The 2 kilometre trail guides you to the greatest spots! And in the meantime, kids learn something about the history of Brunssum in a playful way. And who knows, you might learn something yourself!

How does it work?

This map with all the ‘nice to knows’ can be collected for free at the service desk in the town hall and at Buro Brunssum on Kerkstraat.

The map has two sides. On the one side you find the entire route with all the spots you encounter along the way. They are numbered 1 to 9. The start and finish is at Lindeplein. On the reverse side you find more information plus pictures of the spots.

The route of 2 kilometre takes you to 9 places in the town centre. Each location is a place of interest that is typical for Brunssum and which you might have passed hundreds of times. To ensure some interaction, there are questions that are fun for kids to answer at each location. They might have to look carefully at what’s in front of them and think about their answer. For you as a tour guide, there is additional background information about all the locations.

Let’s walk together for a bit!

First of all, the route takes you through the Vijverpark, giving the kids plenty of room to run and play. For example, at location 4 you are at the playground where they can give it their all! You will also visit the Open Air theatre, a hidden gem amid lush green. Did you know that the first design dates back to 1951? And do know the function of the water between the stage and the grandstand?

Besides playing, there is also room to think about the children that were less fortunate. For example, the children that went into hiding with families in Brunssum during WWII, to be safe from Nazi terror. At point 6 in the Vijverpark, the Jewish Monument, a wooden park bench was erected in 2023, in memory of Zef Hendriks, a young civil servant at the town hall who arranged for dozens of people in Brunssum and far beyond to survive the war with forged IDs.

The New Centre

After the park you enter Kerkstraat. You walk past the old Town Hall, a wonderful monumental building and you will see Buro Brunssum. Do come in and enter if you are interested in all the things that are planned for the New Centre.

Pssssst.. did you know that you can park your bike here for free? Read here what the opening hours are of the bike parking!

On your way to the statue of Truuke Trampel, location 8, you’ll see the experience wall on your left, the place of the Victoriapark to be. Ask your kids to list everything they see on the wall! In future, after visiting Truuke Trampel you will be able to go to location 9 through the park. For now, you retrace your steps in Kerkstraat to take a right to Schiffelerstraat.

The Folkloriade Fountain, the last location of the route, is erected here in honour of the Parade Brunssum. The same Zef Hendriks, civil servant and hero of the resistance during the war, founded the ‘Folkloristic Parade’ in Brunssum, after the flood disaster of 1953. Because of this, Zef Hendriks was nicknamed ‘Mr. Parade’! Now you know where this comes from!

A well-deserved ice cream?

After finishing the trail, you might feel like a treat for yourself and the kids. For the best ice cream you go to Bakery Voncken at Victoriaplein or Ice cream parlour Oberije at Lindeplein!

You are now back at Lindeplein, the start and finish of the art trail.

We hope to have piqued your interest enough to take the kids out for a walk! Have they learned a thing or two? Did you like it yourself? Do let us know via Facebook or Instagram!
